Parsnip 30 May, Ben (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hey Bianca, Yeah unfortunately parsnips need a long cool season to grow at their best, and your question makes sense. I'm in far north nsw and we just make sure to plant them as soon as night temps get consistently below 14C (usually around end April/beginning May) and harvest them before night temps are consistently above 14C (usually late September). They also start to flower around this time so we get them out before that happens too. Saving seeds of the last plants to flower is a good idea so that you can eventually have more heat-tolerant parsnips in future. So basically the earlier you can get them in the better, but not too early! haha. I think the planting times are set as they are because it's when the weather is safely cool enough in ALL subtropical regions but yeah I reckon just go with the conditions of your micro-climate. Hope that helps. Ben
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 15 May, Ian (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
If you live in Brisbane or similar subtropical you should be able to grow them year round. Mulch and slightly raised beds to keep soil temperature constant. Also try different varieties. Traditional big black grows best in spring. Try varegated purple or white varieties all year. Heavy fertilising or hot winds can cause dropped fruit. I've found full sun with western shade best position for long growth and moderate fruit. I think the gardenate planting times are a bit restrictive. If you get seedlings they are worth a try all year. They like free draining moderate heavy soil. Like 50%potting mix/ 50% mushroom or worm compost. Any brisbane black soil is good.
Radish 15 May, Ian (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I've found main pests tend to be grasshoppers and caterpillers. You can grow them with daikon radish in between. They have bigger leaves and grow more vigorously so tend to attract pests. They are also reported to be good for soil system in similar way to rocket. In Japan they grow them in the rows between orchards for soil quality and to suppress pests.
Pumpkin 15 May, Cathy [email protected] (Australia - temperate climate)
Please someone ,could someone tell me when to plant butternut seeds. Now in May autumn and live in Melbourne in Victoria Australia
Pumpkin 04 Aug, Suzanne (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Cathy Gerry Coleby Williams online at Gardening Australia says put your seeds in at 20C as this is temperature needed to germinate pumpkin and all 'curcubit' seeds. Gardenate for temperate Australia says Sep, Oct, Nov for planting. Seeds into some seed raising mix - you can sift your dry compost and add a bit of peat moss and use this as its equally as rich as any 'bought' seed raising mix and when you have actual leaves (as opposed to the first two green 'leaves' which are actually dicotyledons known as'dicots' and not leaves as the plant needs to grow and develop its leaves before being transplanted) plant them out. Hope this helps!

Re the leaf curl. I planted broad bean from seed, only 12 in a raised bed. All of them came up beautifully but slowly one by one succumbed to lead curl. I read this is actually a disease spread by whitefly.A dose of copper spray should resolve. Will give it a go tomorrow and will post results

Hi all. Can anyone tell me the best fertilizer to use on Turnips; at planting and ongoing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Clive.

We have a bed of very healthy plants, but only a couple of flowers. I've trimmed off the few runners. What else can I do to increase flowering. Plants were purchased from bunnings.
Strawberry Plants 09 May, ELIZABETH (Australia - temperate climate)
Donelle, to increase flowering you can prune plants carefully back to the crown this will increase not only new growth but also new flowers.

Sweet corn (also corn, maize) 07 May, Rosemary (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Phoebe. If you plant corn outside now it might germinate if you are lucky, but it won't grow much because it is too cold. Best time to plant it is in spring or early summer. You might like to try peas or broad beans for this time of the year. Both are easy to germinate and grow. If you are looking for a grassy type of plant to grow, try wheat or barley. Good luck.

Do I encourage the plant to produce more fruit or should I remove the bubs? Grateful for any tips. I am in the Hills district of Sydney nsw. Thanks.

Lettuce 05 May, janine (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Establishing a new veggie garden in full sun in frosty rural Northern Tablelands NSW. Thinking a wire fence to keep out rabbits, roos etc. Any suggestions for a deciduous climber to grow on the fence running north-south to protect my veggie garden from the western sun in summer but warm it up in winter. Winter nights can get down to -15°C. Thank you.
