Parsnip 02 May, Tony (Australia - sub-tropical climate): Ok I'm going to give parsnips some serious attention this year - I love 'em! I live on sub-tropical North Coast NSW How worried do I have to be about stones/compost twiggy bits etc in my soil? I have dug down 30cm and sieved the soil to 5 mm - but there are still some gritty bits -do i have to go to flyscreen to get rid of the stoney bits? very tedious sieving- I'm thinking of using equal parts soil/compost - both sieved to 5mm. Any responses gratefully received

Parsnip 24 Sep, Barbara (Australia - temperate climate): I live below the Range at Toowoomba and see plants I have "killed" in my garden growing out of the gravel in the excavations so I no longer worry about that sort of thing as water and nutrients are the important things. Strong roots will go around or even into gravel etc. I make wicking beds [google or you-tube for info], I put bones, a layer of veggie scraps and finely crushed egg shell after the first layer of soil, by the time roots have got down 25 cm. it is a slow release fertilizer.

Strawberry Plants 02 May, ELIZABETH (Australia - cool/mountain climate): I HAVE GROWING STRAWBERRIES IN PVC VERTICAL BEDS FOR SOME TIME NOW IN A HOT HOUSE BUT STILL WONDER HOW OFTEN I SHOULD WATER THEM. I HAVE DRIPPERS DOWN THE SIDE OF THE PIPE, IN THE SUMMER THEY AUTOMATICALLY COME ON EVERY HOUR/TWO HOURLY DEPENDING ON WEATHER FOR 1-2 MINUTES. HAVE READ TODAY ONLY TO HAVE THE DRIPPERS SET UP 2 THIRDS DOWN THE PIPE. AND HOW OFTEN DO I WATER NOW HAVING JUST PLANTED NEW PLANTS THROUGHOUT THE HYDROPONIC SYSTEM. THANK YOU.

Beetroot (also Beets) 02 Aug, Feras (Australia - temperate climate): Check out the NPK on the fertiliser, something high in N will produce plenty of green leafy growth but no root/vegetable production. Pick the right fertiliser for the right plant ;)

Lettuce 30 Apr, Paul (Australia - arid climate): If you grow the loose leaf types you will have better success against frost. I have frost proofed my 2 permanent beds of six different lettuce by growing them in wicking beds and aquaponics as the whole bed keeps itself protected by being a thermal mass during the night absorbing heat from direct sun in the day. Otherwise throw some heavy duty clear plastic over them last thing before the sun goes down and keep your mulch nice and thick. That will help maintain a warmer temperature during the night.

Parsley (also curly leaf parsley or flat leaf (Italian) parsley) 27 Apr, Dan in the Garden (Australia - temperate climate): I grow a continuous supply of flat leaf parsley to make tabouli. It's such a healthy salad. The parsley takes the iron out of my soil and converts it into a form I can eat. A glass of orange juice helps your body absorb it.

Zucchini (also Courgette/Marrow, Summer squash) 27 Apr, Megan (Australia - tropical climate): I have been having trouble growing black Jack zuchini. They grow with yellowish leaves not healthy green ones what am I doing wrong. I have given them sea sole complete fertilizer every two weeks. Have prayed with watery milk for fungus.
