Could be a wilt disease, too much water. I definitely would not have mulched them with all the rain you have had. Depends what your soil is like - clayish or sandy.

I lived in Maitland in the Hunter Valley until 1985. We used to get a white fleshed sweet potato that when cooked was soft, almost opaque, and very sweet. My mother would post to me when I moved to Brisbane as I couldn’t get them here! My questions is. What were they and where can I get them? Phillip Caruthers.

I don’t have a papery husk but green and brown serrated ‘things’ after flowering. When I open the brown ones they look like seed pods. What to do?

I have texas grano onions to make set. blue lake pole beans, purple hull peas, tomato(transplant),Bell pepper (Trans plants) when do I plant? putting them in my big pots these are all going into large pots.

I know this is old but answering for future reference. Being stripped of all leaves is usually locusts. Pesticides won't help but encouraging local bird life does. Sparrows of all birds feed on their young voraciously and if you have sparrows you won't have locusts for long. Butcher birds like the adults.

One 6b - Bought crowns in late spring and they were misplaced.until now August. They are not dried out and I'd like to salvage whatever is possible. If I plant them now ANDif they grow, the season will be over and cold by October. Should I refrigerate the crowns and maybe wait til spring to plant or go ahead and put them out now? Also, would it be of benefit to use innoculant to stimulate them, individually pot them indoors under grow lights and gently transplant to an outside bed in spring? What makes sense?

There are several types of garlic, but the main two are hardneck and softneck. Hardneck is for colder climates and softneck is for warmer climates. Not sure about elephant garlic or any of the others but you can search the internet to find out what zones they grow best in.

Some of the flowers have turned into green spiky husks, then turned a dark brown/black. Is this normal?

These grow fantastically in Western MA. Great yield. Several self-seeded plants around the property are doing ok. Amazing considering how dry it's been this summer.

hi everybody this app is so helpful, but my cucumbers always die ,i live right between buildings and i got a good amount of breeze going through but too much shade because of all the trees i wonder if there is a seed type i can plant here in the shade most

Watermelon 02 Aug, rhonda (USA - Zone 9a climate)
It is now the beginning of August 2022 and I was wondering if it is possible to grow watermelons from seed in grow zone 9a (Houston Texas) if I grow them in a giant pot and keep it in a shady area of my yard out of the extreme heat we are experiencxing now in Texas? I planted some seeds (direct seeded into the top of a compost pile I have in direct sunlight) they did germinate into very small seedling plants, but because the weather was hitting over 100 degrees they immediately died back. So I am attempting to grow some in a large pot and keeping them out of direct sunlight and seeing if they will continue growing, if so I will try to grow them vertically on a trellis. Has anyone else ever attempted such a experiment? If so, were they successful in getting a watermelon to grow out of season?

Dear Sirs, I live in Gladstone and now for 2 years I was not able to buy fresh artichokes as Wollworth and Coles do not cater for them. I am Italian and I LOOOOOOVE artichokes which in Sydney I used to buy at all Italian greengrocers, but here is just a dream which is not coming true!!! Is it possible to have some artichokes here in this town?? I will buy a lot as I can also preserve them quite well...but I need them fresh!!! Is anybody answering me?? Cheers. Claudia De Maria

Id like to grow some granex onions like the Texas Grano. Can I sow the seeds now in seed trays and plant them outside n September? Do the onions become dormant when the weather gets cold?

I have seedlings I am ready to transplant into a raised container bed. My question is, how much sun should they get for Zone 9? I know the package sys full sun, but I don't think that applies when temperatures can get over 100 for several days at a time. I have a large shade tree and I was thinking of putting them under it, but concerned it then wont get enough sun.

I brought yams at mitre 10. The packet says planr July/August but all online info says plant in Spring. I live inland Tasman area if that helps.

I'd go with the online info. We plant October/November, harvesting May/June (better after the first frost). They can take their time to really take off - ours had minimal foliage until March.

Cut back the vines to about 12 inches above ground after the last choko has been picked, closer to the end of winter. They will have very little growth for ages and then grow again when the time is right. The leaves can be dead at the beginning of vines but still keep fruit growing at the ends. They fruit for many months.

I tried seeding broccoli in mini pots for a fall crop, and apparently too much sun scorched the seedlings even though they were well watered. How much daily sun exposure should they get during 90 degree F temperatures? I am at home most days, so I can move them around.
