Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 15 Apr, Annabelle (New Zealand - temperate climate)
I have grown tomatillos for several years -they usually grow from self seeding. This season, very strangely a whole lot of seedlings self grew but they have turned into what looks like Cape gooseberries - which I have never grown in my garden at all.. they have the cases and are yellow and small. I am very confused.( I also am harvesting tomatillos at the moment from self seeded plants. Definitely different plants.) Is there some sort of regressive hybrid or genetic weirdness going on here?

Strawberry Plants 12 Apr, (South Africa - Humid sub-tropical climate)
Hi, Looking for ideas on low chill stone fruit varieties with successful fruiting along the kzn Westville area. I am getting mixed information with some claims of high humidity being problematic. As a kid we had a green variety of peach that bore 100's if fruit but cant find the exact variety. Thanks Mohammed

Your title says strawberries - your question is regarding peaches. You seem to have two issues. The first chilling hours -- which the net (FTN) defines as: Chilling hours are the minimum number of hours that a peach tree needs to get, specifically, nighttime temperatures between 32 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit, in order to produce a good crop of peaches.. If the hours are not met (say in a warm winter), the blossoms mostly just fall off the trees and do not set fruit. Additionally you mentioned humidity which for peaches is leaf curl: (FTN) Peach leaf curl is a fungal disease of peach and nectarine. It is favoured by prolonged wet, cool weather in the spring as new growth is developing. Infected leaves become thick and curled with red and yellow discolouration. Infected leaves eventually drop. Again FTN Peaches with the fewest chill hour requirements are all yellow freestones. Cultivars needing 100 chill hours or less, the lowest requirement, include Gulf Queen (Prunus persica “Gulf Queen"), Mid Pride (Prunus persica “Mid Pride”), Bonita (Prunus persica “Bonita”) and Ventura (Prunus persica “Ventura”). Also Eva's Pride. additionally: With one exception, white peaches with low chill requirements are all freestones. At 200 chill hours, Tropic Snow (Prunus persica “Tropic Snow") has the lowest requirement. If you think a nectarine might work then: Desert Delight is a good choice --- but it seems to me that you might want to think about persimmons.

Ginger 10 Apr, Heidi Ruede (South Africa - Dry summer sub-tropical climate)
I have at this time of season ( April ) a small sprouting ginger root. I believe it is not the right time of season to plant it into my vegetable garden. What am I going to do with this root? Please advise. I am living in Cape town with winter rains. I really would also appreciate directions how to plant it best. Thank you very much for your helpful advise. Looking forward to your response. Kind regards, Heidi

You could maybe plant it in a pot and protect it from excess rain, then plant out in the spring.

Coriander (also Cilantro, Chinese parsley) 07 Apr, Phil (Australia - temperate climate)
This would interest any gardeners in PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. After repeated attempts of transplanting coriander in the spring and watching it slowly grow to a small growth then just bolt to seed. After hearing a quick excerpt from the Garden Gurus show last year recommending the autumn period (April-May)....the success was evident. I had a massive crop just with 3 plants....Hope this helps and....plant now!

Good advice for my area as well -- thanks

Coriander does not like being transplanted and handled much. Yes it bolts to seed quick so grow it in the autumn winter.

I just bought Fragaria “Eclair” Strawberries. They are rated 10b, so should work for you. This is my first time with them, so crossing my fingers. I also have Mara Des Bois that I have purchased have bought barefoot. I have had several of the original plants for a couple of years. I grow in pots and move around as the seasons change. Everything is going into dappled sun now. This Fla sun is fierce in the midday already. Some under a Mango tree, some near my stand of bananas. I also have some amSeascapes that have survived. Sweet Charlie’s were recommended, but didn’t do well for me. Truly, these southern zones, people treat Strawberries as annuals.

It amazes me that people grow strawberries in full sun -- sure they can grow there but their leaves scorch. Strawberries (most varieties) tend to be forest floor (perimeter of the forest) plants -- that is they are understory plants and tend to grow best in dappled shade. I have had people show me pictures of strawberries growing in the sand on a beach.... yes it was growing, but it was getting some relief from the sun for part of the day (it was on the side of a sand dune) .... and the leaves where still scorched and I certainly would not have called them prize specimens, survivors would be a more accurate name for them. I have grow them here in B.C. , Canada -- in the shade (some in full shade) and they do fine. The sun is not as intense as FLA (having lived in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale) - where I could not even withstand the sun .... I certainly would not expect a strawberry plant to manage.
