Rhubarb 18 Apr, glenda deschamps (Australia - temperate climate)
We have had our rhubarb in for more than 1 year and the leaves and stalks are growing beautiful but are still green. When will they turn red?
Rhubarb 22 Apr, Tempest (Australia - temperate climate)
They won't. It sounds like you have a green-stalk variety of rhubarb. If the stalks aren't even partially red when they first sprout then it's not a red variety. I've got three different red rhubarb varieties and even the dullest colour one had stalks come up with a pinky tinge to it. Do you know what the variety you have is called? Also, whether it was grown from crown or seed? For example I've heard that the Victoria variety can be either red or green, and if it's grown from seed then it's far more likely to end up being green.
Rhubarb 02 Sep, longinthetooth (Australia - temperate climate)
The culinary web sites recommend the green varieties, better taste, but quite difficult to find.

Chilli peppers (also Hot peppers) 17 Apr, Louisa (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have a birds eye chilli bush that a friend gave me half grown that was in a pot. My husband transplanted it in backyard with commercial potting mix. My problem is the bush has plenty of flowers but no fruit. What can we do so as the bush will yeild chillies. I live in Townsville, Nq. Any help would be most appreciated.

I know the teply is late but try a bit of potash to up the potassium and avoid nitrogen heavy fertilizers during the flowering season.
Pumpkin 17 Apr, Kevin hall (Australia - temperate climate)
During Autumn do I remove all pumpkin stems and re-compost the soil or trim the stems and cover with straw ?

Either of them
Garlic 16 Apr, Jen (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I would like to know which varieties of garlic are suitable to grow in Brisbane and where I could purchase them. Any advice would be really appreciated.
Garlic 02 May, Brooke (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Hi Jen, Elephant garlic will grow well. It is not as strong as the other smaller garlics, but you should find success. Be sure to mound up so you can ensure drainage and control water to them. Space 20cm apart in rich soil. Good luck
Garlic 01 May, Grace (Australia - tropical climate)
Hi Jen, I am from Brisbane and have just planted my garlic. This will be my 3rd year. I bought some organic garlic from the Lawnton Market and kept some from previous years to grow again. I plant it late April/early May and harvest around late Sept/early Oct. I grew the white garlic variety as shown in picutre shown above.

Hi Faye, You are too late now. Sow your seeds in the beginning of September, so that your plants grow into summer. All the best, Bob

Asparagus 19 Aug, Mike (Australia - temperate climate)
Plant August - Oct. Probably later in the cooler climates. For soil I used 1/3 good loam/ red soil - 1/3 composted grass clippings and 1/3 horse manure. A couple of good handfuls of general garden fertilizer every 6 weeks until Feb. I have three plants in a box 5' x 2'. My crowns grew from 1 1/2" to approx. 10" in the first year. They started shooting new stalks a week ago. Weather has been quite warm 23-25c.
Asparagus 05 Aug, Mike (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I bought some at Bunnings - cost about $8-9 each
Asparagus 13 May, Gaz (Australia - arid climate)

Garlic 13 Apr, Barbara (Australia - temperate climate)
can you plant garlic in pots?
Garlic 15 Apr, Jen (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Yes, you can Barbara, .... for extra bulbs I have always planted about extra cloves, and found that 6 cloves planted into a large HDPE pot the largest I have are 420 mm 42 cm wide, and with mulch over the top and a good base of a mix of animal manures all goes well. We are in our cool climate though....good especially if people are renting OR planning on moving within the year... Happy gardening Jen cool climate
Sunflower 13 Apr, Susan Stewart (Australia - temperate climate)
Is the sunflower root edible? If so, is it similar to the helianthus variety known as Jerusalem Artichoke?
Rhubarb 13 Apr, Shirley stephen (Australia - temperate climate)
What manure do you use to make winter Rhurbarb which grow green stalks into Red This was on a better homes and gardens a few weeks ago
Rhubarb 12 Apr, Cassie (Australia - arid climate)
I have the same issue and have just reconciled myself.
Garlic 12 Apr, Cassie (Australia - arid climate)
Noooo Gearge! The rough bottom is the root plate where the clove will grow new roots from so it won't help to damage it.
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 12 Apr, Cassie (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
The advice seems conflicting. Plant snowpeas now (first frosts expected this week and then seriously downhill) but the plants apparently dont like frost. Can someone sort this one out for me?
Snow Peas (also Sugar Peas, Mangetout, Chinese Peas) 24 Apr, Jan (Australia - temperate climate)
Snow Peas and Sugar Snaps are tougher than you think. I like to plant a just a few seeds near my trellis then every week plant another half a dozen seeds to extend my growing season as long as possible. I only stop when the weather gets too warm in WA summer. I have these growing for months this way.
Strawberry Plants 12 Apr, Julie (Australia - temperate climate)
I planted certified strawberry plants last year in a raised bed. They finished fruiting and i would like to lift them and trim and then replant as the soil level has sunk and there's a lot of couch and clover in the bed. Can i do it now? Living in west gippsland.
Strawberry Plants 24 Apr, Ivan (Australia - temperate climate)
Hello Julie: now would be a good time - there will still be some warmth in both the soil and air that will help the roots re-establish before the Gippsland cold sets in. Some may flower but the fruiting won't proceed.
