Potato 29 Sep, chris (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
No they are of the same family, try changing the soil around and giving fresh soil to the bed , then planting.

Rhubarb 08 Sep, kathy (Australia - temperate climate)
is it best to snap the stems of or snip them
Rhubarb 27 Oct, Tempest (Australia - temperate climate)
Pull them off at the base of the stalk. If you cut them, it leaves an open 'wound' for disease to get into the rhubarb plant.
Tomato 07 Sep, Trish J (Australia - temperate climate)
The first crop of tomatoes I ever grew were sprawling over the Rosemary bushes (lots of them) and were amazingly abundant. Last year I read the notes above so planted them well away from the Rosemary - they received heaps of TLC - i.e. straw on the ground, good moisture and according to instructions - two separate locations, one lot in straw bale the other in garden bed... just didn't do a well, were not abundant and were very hit and miss. Back to the Rosemary this year and I haven't decided where else yet.

Rhubarb 04 Sep, Greig Thomas (Australia - temperate climate)
We have rhubarb growing but the stems are large but still green how long before the turn pink so we can pick them?
Rhubarb 16 Nov, John (Australia - temperate climate)
Hello Greig, AS a lot of rhubarb is grown from seed it can be very variable in stem colour. I understand greenish stems are just as flavourful but less appealing. put a little bit of cochineal (red food colouring) or raspberry cordial in the pot when you are cooking it to enhance the appearance. trust this helps.
Rhubarb 09 Sep, Polly J (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
There is a variety of rhubarb that has green stems and it actually is milder than the red stem variety. So pick and enjoy.
Rhubarb 09 Nov, Rebecca (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
Gold Coast here.. Usually my rhubarb carks it after 12 mths or so.. doesn't like sea level humidity. When I cook the green stem varieties, I simply add a drop of cochineal once cooled down to change colour to the red..(which is more attractive.)
Chives (also Garden chives) 03 Sep, Detlef (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
The black creatures you have seen on your chives are a type of aphid. Here in Tassie I have had them on spring onions, Garlic chives and chives. They can be gotten rid of with any food crop safe organic mild insecticide. I have used a white oil insecticide with great success. Cheers
Tomato 01 Sep, Terry Salisbury (Australia - temperate climate)

Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 01 Sep, Melissa (Australia - tropical climate)
I live in Darwin. I just threw out a lot of seeds into the bare paddock in Oct and let them grow naturally. After the monsoons best crop!
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 01 Sep, Suzanne (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Phil, I have the same problem, Ive been growing Physalis Cape Gooseberry for 3 years in full sun in a pot in the Hills District of Sydney and they never ripen. I feed the soil in the pot and give away lots of seedings that perform a lot better. My grandmother had a huge bush and we had absolutely amazing cape gooseberry jam - also in Northern Italy they pull back the husks to look like wings leaving a long stalk on the ripe berry and dip the berry to half cover in chocolate and they are very expensive to buy and taste delicious... I too would love to have a solution to the half-ripening and still small when they drop off, berries. Let me know if you have an answer.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 11 Oct, James (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi Suzanne, I am by no means an experienced Cape Gooseberry grower, but I have had more success with ripening by treating the plant a little meaner. Don't feed your plant, too much nitrogen makes it grow leaves and the leaves prevent ripening I have found. James
Carrot 01 Sep, Inez (Australia - temperate climate)
hi i was just wondering in what season a purple carrot might grow or i s it just the same as any old carrot? and if it is the same as a "normal" carrot when do they grow(season)?
Carrot 29 Sep, Michael (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
you can grow purple carrots anytime of the year.
Leeks 31 Aug, Heidi (Australia - temperate climate)
I have always had trouble growing leeks. When I transplant them from bought seedlings, they don't thrive and fatten up. Someone suggested I leave them in clumps and this seems to work. What is the reason they don't like being on their own?
Leeks 17 Dec, Kathy (Australia - temperate climate)
G'day Heidi, I also have trouble growing Leeks & I also want to know why they don't like being on their own. I'll be keen to know what people suggest to you & I'll try it myself. Mate, I just wanted to let you know your not on your own !!!!!!

i have been monitoring the soil temperature for a couple of weeks and it seems to be above 12 to16 degrees most days , sometimes in the early 20 I measured the soil temperature at 25 mm below ground level , seed sowing recommendations the seeds went into the ground today and as we speak the sprinklers are on should come up in 2 weeks , fingers crossed I followed the 3 sisters format as close as I could , my beds are not 5 feet wide
Rosella (also Queensland Jam Plant, Roselle) 27 Aug, Alan Broughton (Australia - temperate climate)
I have saved seeds from last years Rosella's plants. What is the best time to sow the seeds for this years planting. Have some in seed mix at the moment, but nothing happening after two weeks.I think it may be still to cold yet. Am at Port Stephens on the coast nsw. For what it's worth, I mix manderine and orange pulp with my rosella jam. Feed back is very positive for taste and appearance. Delicious jam.
