I have had the same when I harvested the seeds from the King sunflowers from the season before and planted them. They look mutant !
Sunflower 04 Oct, Chris (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
Maybe an F1 hybrid so they won't grow true in following generations?

Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 25 Sep, Kay (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I'm in Tassie and have cape gooseberries both in my greenhouse and the garden. Our possums love them but they have to beat our grandchildren to them. I encouage the kids because they are so full of vitamins and help keep the colds away. They pop up in the blue metal in our driveway all the time as well although I do find they are difficult to move successfully. I'm yet to make jam - too many possums/grandchildren.
Brussels sprouts 25 Sep, Kay (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I'm in northern Tasmania and planted my Brussel sprouts in May as well. The whole lot went to seed after producing a few very loose sprouts. I though a pout using the leaves in soups etc as I hate waste, but I read that they are quite bitter so I guess the lot go into compost. Any comments welcome
Brussels sprouts 17 Oct, Jul (Australia - temperate climate)
If you still have some going to seed, let them, and then collect the ripe seed for sowing later.
Brussels sprouts 26 Sep, Candice (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I had the same experience, Kay, but I did harvest the plant on the weekend and made a delicious soup with the leaves. I put the hard stems in the compost. The base stock for the recipe was one diced onion and six cloves of garlic chopped and softened in olive oil, 2 litres of chicken stock, 1 cup of white wine, 1 cup of water, salt and white pepper. Add the leaves and 250g of mushrooms and simmer away for an hour or so then blitz with a hand blender. I also added half a cup of cream at the end. It was really delicious and the left overs went into the freezer!
Horseradish 25 Sep, Carolyn Lewis (Australia - temperate climate)
Been buying a paste from spud shed, it was made in Europe. It has help control my allergies, chest mucus and sinus. Tablets from the chemist does not work as good. Living in Perth. Tried all nurseries can't get it. Can you help me. I grow my own turmeric and make it in a paste with a pinch of black pepper. This also works better than tablets for inflamation arthritis..

Sweet Potato (also Kumara) 24 Sep, Kay (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have planted slips that I grew about 2-3 months ago, The slips are in soil, in large plastic tubes with holes in the bottom & sides to drain as much water I can. We have had soooo much rain, & I checked the top & bottom soil. The top soil is dry, but the bottom soil is very wet. Should I leave them to do what it automatically do itself to grow, or remove the soil & slips & start again? I dug to bottom of the vines to see how they have been growing. The slips have lots of roots.
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 24 Sep, Fiona Waddell (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi I ve just discovered we have a cape gooseberry plant growing behind our shed... it has randomly appeared and is almost a metre high. None of the fruit have grown any bigger than a $2 coin and havent ripened. It is currently in the ground but I was wandering if I should move it? To full sun or whether i should collect the dropped fruit for seeds?

Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 23 Sep, Peter Oberthur (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
What bush beans should I plant that will not get destroyed by bean fly/bug. Generally my beans get to the flowering stage then the stem is attacked and they all fall over - dead. I live in Brisbane.
Beans - dwarf (also French beans, Bush beans) 19 May, Mike (Australia - sub-tropical climate)
I have the same problem - plant March April and they grow really good then the stem is eaten and they fall over shrivel up and die. I have read to put Boron in the soil. I also read to grow them in the spring. I also read to put toilet roll cardboard centers over the plant into the soil to stop snails etc. When I first moved into this house 18 years ago in late September I planted beans and had a fantastic crop. I'm waiting until late winter to plant and I'm putting some trace elements in my soil - contains some boron. Will see how that goes.
Beetroot (also Beets) 22 Sep, Eileen Looker (Australia - temperate climate)
I planted beetroot tops which took a long time to grow but left them in the pot as the leaves looked quite decorative. I pulled one out to see if there was fruit on it but found that it had not ground round but in a tuber shape, the whole pot was full of beetroot tubers. I cooked it up thinking it would be woody but it lovely and tender and full of flavour. Is that normal for beetroot.
Rhubarb 22 Sep, Janeen (Australia - temperate climate)
My rhubarb has healthy leaves but very short stems. How can I encourage the stems to grow much longer?
Rhubarb 10 Jun, Paul Ryan (Australia - cool/mountain climate)
I planted new Rhubarb in the ground and used old poultry manure to feed them, it took two seasons for the plants to grow large stems. If you have new plants it will take a few seasons for them to do much better. Water daily and good luck
Cape Gooseberry (also Golden Berry, Inca Berry ) 22 Sep, sharyn (Australia - temperate climate)

Eggplant (also Aubergine) 21 Sep, kitty luong (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi. I wonder can I growth eggplant in a container?. If so how big is the container have to be?. Thank
Eggplant (also Aubergine) 19 Oct, Michael (Australia - temperate climate)
Hi, you can grow eggplant in containers. I have to chase the sun because of the tall trees around my garden and I have a few on the decking. If you keep the water up to it and feed well, they will fruit just fine. Use something around the 10 - 15ltr size.
